Partnership Projects
Partnership projects are used worldwide to tackle the challenges of sustainability, urben regeneration and urban growth management. They are based on a recognition that no one agency, company or government department can achieve significant outcomes in urban areas unless they find a way of working cooperatively with others. In WA the State Sustainability Strategy and Network City Plan both reply on partnerships for implementation. But what they lack is any indication of what these partnerships are, or how you do them! Brian has worked on major urban regeneration projects in the UK where there is enabling legislation, funding and supporting structures for implementation. In WA he was nominated to be the State government representative on three sustainability based partnership projects that brought State and Local government together working towards a common goal. He has also worked and advised on a number of other major government partnership projects witihn urban areas. Maddington Kenwick Sustainable Communities Partnership:The first State/Local government partnership proposed in the metropolitan area focuses on the revitalisation of the middle ring suburbs of Maddington and Kenwick. Brian was nominated by the Minister and Premier to co-chair the Technical Committee and coordinate the State government input into the partnership. The project got underway in late 2002 and Brian has overseen the community visioning phase under the direction of Steven Ames from Portland, Oregon. As a consultant he worked on preparing the Action and Implementation Plan, he worked with the sustainability Unit at Murdoch University on a major Partnership Performance Review, and has undertaken workshops with project managers on management initiatives through the implementation process. City of Swan Partnership:Brian was also nominated by the Minister and Premier to undertake a similar role for the City of Swan Partnership that seeks to achieve urban regeneration outcomes, better growth management and cross government coordination in the City of Swan. The project got underway in 2004. Brian was a consultant to the partnership to establish the partnership protocols. Wanneroo Town Centre Partnership:This partnership was established to achieve the revitalisation of the Wanneroo town centre through a State-local government partnership. To assist in the preparation of an action plan Brian was engaged to facilitate 5 focus group workshops to generate actions, and then a further community workshop to identify priorities for action. |
