Urban Regeneration Projects

Cardiff Bay, Wales:

At JLW Brian prepared an urban design assessment of the potential of Cardiff Bay for the Secretary of State for Wales. The conclusion was that construction of a barrage across the bay to raise the water level, would create a waterside setting for major new development. The area was the first designated Development Corporation outside of London Docklands, and today forms one of the most impressive examples of a successful government-led urban regeneration project in the UK.

East Manchester Commonwealth Games Site, UK:

Brian brought the site owners of vacant land together and prepared an urban design appraisal of the potential of the area to accommodate the City Council's aspirations for a major urban regeneration project built around a sporting complex that could accommodate the Olympic Games. The proposals were accepted and a successful bid made to English Partnerships for site remediation funding. Brian chaired a committee to launch the major urban regeneration project, including proposals for a new stadium, velodrome, retail and mixed use development. The facilities hosted the last Commonwealth Games held in Manchester.

Northbridge Urban Renewal:

Brian took over management responsibility for the Northbridge Urban Renewal Project that included 17ha of central city land in Perth acquired for the Graham farmer Freeway Tunnel in 1998. He was responsible for the development of the original concept plan, the amendment of the Metropolitan Region Scheme, liaison with Main Roads WA, community liaison, and oversaw the project management undertaken by the East Perth Redevelopment Authority and its consultants. He subsequently managed the handover process of the entire project to EPRA including the negotiations on the sale of the land, and preparation of a policy on community service obligations towards existing occupiers.
